During underground construction, significant quantities of harmful gases and dust are generated. At excavation sites, the concentration of respirable dust can reach up to 600 mg/m³ . According to the European standard BS 6164-2019, the permissible exposure limits for respirable crystalline silica dust and respirable dust are ≤0.1 mg/m³ and <4 mg/m³ respectively. Respirable crystalline silica is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), posing severe health risks to on-site workers.
The dust and noxious gas produced are conducive to the equipment operation and maintenance, thus seriously delay the project schedule. Underground space environment management directly affects the construction period, even the whole project.
